Black Cannabis: 3 Tips to Preserve Your CBD Cannabis Flowers.
If you like CBD weed, you should always treat it the right way, even concerning its preservation. It is a very delicate product. Cannabis flowers are not like conventional dried flowers! They can be easily affected by mould and pests, and in the worst case, you could open the drawer and find blackened marijuana instead of the green buds you bought.
We have no idea that you don’t want to have a musty CBD flower. As a result, we will first explain how to spot mushrooms on your precious cannabis buds; then we will give you several tips on proper storage of products.
How to recognize mould in cannabis
If you are not an expert in legal cannabis, or at least you have never seen flowers in a bad state, then you may need precise directions to understand whether the flowers have been affected by mould spores or not.
First of all, you’ll need to have a magnifying glass (or, if possible, a black light). Put your legal cannabis flowers under the lens and pay attention to the following:
- Dark spots.
- Spots that could be of different colours – for example white, dark brown or yellow.
- White, grey or black elements, similar to a spider’s web.
- A smell of mould.
- An ammonia smell (similar to urine).
Of course, if you noticed blackened marijuana, but also brown, while it was green, then you can get rid of your flowers right away.
Some fungi, including black mould, are hazardous. For example, spores can cause respiratory problems such as asthma and even pneumonia due to mould.
If you keep your bag of cannabis inside your room, you should check several times a week that this harmful fungus has not attacked it.
Are you wondering what causes black mould on cannabis?
The leading cause of the formation of this fungus is moisture. It also contributes to the poor circulation of air in the room in which cannabis is stored (or grown).

1) Marijuana Conservation Tips: Avoid plastic bags.
Avoid storing your legal weed in plastic bags, as they can keep moisture inside them after opening.
Waterproof glass pots are the best choice for storing your cannabis flowers. They are found everywhere, as they are commonly used to store foods such as dry pasta and jams. The airtight pots are ideal because nothing enters or leaves the container, until the opening, without letting the oxygen in.
What you put inside a glass jar stays as good as the first day, until you expose it to oxygen. Also, the glass has no smell, so you will not contaminate cannabis with different scents and flavours of its own.
Even if you keep your marijuana flowers in a very moist room, mould (black, white or other colours) will be very difficult to create, especially if you follow the advice of the following paragraphs.
The only drawback of transparent glass is that it allows light to penetrate inside. And the sun’s rays could damage your cannabis. So find a closet, a drawer, or at least a location in your home that stays dark all day.
Do not expose the pot to sunlight as this could cause condensation and then form mould.
2) Marijuana conservation tips: Ideal temperature and humidity.
The ideal would be to store your cannabis in a cool, dark place (and, we remind you, in a glass jar).
What’s fresh? Try to keep the temperature below 20-25ºC. Moisture, as you may have already read, is also a mould-forming factor, but it is a little more challenging to control.
Ideally, you should do this is to keep the marijuana containers in a place that has about 60% moisture. Over 65%, and you will have a mould problem that can be annoying.
Be careful though: never store cannabis in the refrigerator or freezer. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity could cause irreparable damage to marijuana buds. Besides, freezing the bud makes it fragile, and cannabinoid-rich trichomes could be damaged. Cannabis that does not smell is a significant sign of this problem.
Another signal is a flower that is too dry. Cannabis must be sticky, and this shows that it is undoubtedly in good condition.

3) Marijuana conservation tips: Don’t pile too many flowers into the same container.
When choosing the perfect pot, think about how much CBD cannabis you want to store indoors. Do not use a jar that is too large for a small number of cannabis flowers, as it allows more oxygen to enter after opening the lid.
Try to adapt the container to the volume of cannabis to be stored. As the number of cannabis decreases, move it into smaller and smaller jars.
Bonus Tip: Keep each strain of marijuana separately. Each variety has its unique characteristics, and the best way to maintain them is to store it in its jar, separated from the other strains!
